TATMA industry chat with Award Winning Make up Artist Nikki Gooley. She is known for her Bafta and Saturn award for “The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe” and her Oscar and Saturn nomination for Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith.

How did you get started working in film?

I have always been interested in film & the whole process. I was in a Theatre group and went to a workshop involving staging and lighting. A makeup artist gave a demonstration of theatrical makeup and I loved it.

What is the best advice you have been given on how to survive in this industry?

It’s long hours, hard work, sometimes incredibly quiet so resilience is the key to survival.

What do you look for in a Make Up Artist when hiring your make up crew?

I want to know that person is interested in the whole process. You have to be in it for the craft of film making. It’s not about slapping on a bit of makeup. It’s the whole package . It’s a team effort.

What have been some of your Career highlights?

I have been fortunate to have worked all over the world and with some incredible people.

What advice to you give to our future generation of artists?

Perseverance, honesty and sheer hard work will get you through the barrier.
